Description

Consistent with the mission, vision and values of National League of Cities, manage all communication and marketing projects and initiatives related to the organization’s member recruitment, engagement and retention, constituency groups and member networks, the promotion of corporate partnerships and enterprise programs and the organization’s portfolio work on race and equity. Key audiences include members, potential members, media, partners and funders, and the general public.  Oversee the creation of marketing and communications materials through information gathering; developing key messages; writing and editing communications; and consulting with creative teams on the execution of visual designs; and collaborating with embedded departments and project stakeholders.

As a condition of employment, NLC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid, and to provide proof of such, by November 30, 2021 or the date of hire, whichever is later.



Requirements

  1. Marketing & Communications Projects
    • Oversee marketing and communications projects for NLC’s Member & Partnership Engagement portfolio from initial ideation through execution and delivery.  Develop progress reports for ongoing projects to stakeholders.
    • Own relationships with internal partners within Member and Partner Engagement who request marketing and communications support and counsel them on effective solutions—serving as the subject matter expert on linking NLC intent to the marketing and communications with creative output. 
    • Have clear understanding of stakeholder needs and goals for all marketing and communications requests-- proactively ask questions about intended goals of messaging and target audiences to ideate meaningful solutions.
    • Ensure the accuracy and quality of all communication and marketing project deliverables for Member & Partner Engagement team.
    • Manage key relationships and identify business connections with internal teams to maximize efficiency.  Manage communication with internal and external stakeholders and design teams on the timing and delivery of marketing and communications deliverables.
    • Participate in cross-departmental initiatives and provide updates to senior leadership.
    • Oversee communication and marketing project budgets and expenses for the Member & Partner Engagement team.  Forecast costs, review and approve invoices, notify stakeholders of cost variances, and perform related administrative tasks.
  2. Content Development
    • Manage creative ideas to execute content related to NLC’s membership and external partners based on industry best practices, past successes, and industry research.  Solve challenges while adhering to the goals and objectives for delivered content.
    • Oversee the creation of content for a variety of audiences and channels, including email, video, digital, signage, print, and internal communications.  Edit and revise content produced by team members as needed.
    • Develop engaging presentations, talking points, scripts, and speeches for NLC leadership to connect with intended audiences.
    • Understand and embed the NLC brand and voice in all content.  Partner with other departments to maintain consistency in content across the organization.
  3. Marketing & Communications Strategy
    • Oversee the planning and development of marketing and communications strategies for Member & Partner Engagement in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications Program Director.  Define goals and measurements of success based on desired objectives and outcomes.
    • Track and report the results of measurable marketing and communications strategies to stakeholders and senior leadership.  Recommend changes to strategies and tactics to address areas of underperformance.
  4. Media Relations
    • Manage a comprehensive media relations and communications program that enhances the image and position of NLC.  Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications Program Director and stakeholders to elevate NLC’s work in a coordinated fashion with our larger communications and media strategies.
    • Serve as a media advisor to leadership and staff in Member & Partner Engagement.  Coordinate interviews with key contacts and develop talking points, messaging, and other supporting press materials.
    • Work to build the media profile of NLC leadership as experts of city advocacy.
    • Receive and respond to inquiries from media and other stakeholders related to NLC’s leadership, members, corporate and business partners, and other key groups.
    • Manage the tracking and development of media lists. Oversee the dissemination of news releases and help identify media targets.
  5. Analysis and Improvement
    • Track and compile data on completed marketing and communications initiatives.  Identify trends and patterns that can be used to enhance the success of current and future initiatives.
    • Identify opportunities for new and engaging content.  Prepare and present ideas to Member & Partner Engagement leaders and team members for consideration.
    • Keep current with communication and marketing best practices.
  6. Leadership
    • Guide and direct the efforts of assigned staff members to plan and complete work in support of marketing and communications projects.  Define individual work goals, expectations, priorities, and measures for success.
    • Perform functions typically associated with managing and leading others, including performance management, recruitment and selection.
  7. Perform other duties and complete special projects as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, Political Science, or a related field
  • 6+ years of applicable experience
  • 2+ years of experience serving as a communications manager, including working closely with senior management teams
  • Demonstrated capability to coordinate complex projects on time, on budget, and error-free
  • Strong understanding of various communication styles, particularly AP
  • Adobe Acrobat and MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Experience working with government entities and/or non-profit organizations preferred

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in a standard office setting working at a desk or table on a level surface.  Minimal travel is expected.  May be required to work more hours than normal during a regular workweek depending on workload and deadline requirements.

This position is based at the NLC office in Washington, D.C., and may be eligible for part-time telework.
